Posting due to the mistreatment of a friend who was just in the shop, a Black woman who was told to wait and subjected to racially insensitive comments allowed in the store. The cashier continued to ring up other people after asking her to wait, eventually causing her to walk out. When she made an appointment to speak to the owner about the situation, considering all the “anti-racist” work they’re doing, she was advised that the owners had “known them a long time” and they have “certain things in their chart” regarding their energy (in reference to the cashier). This store, especially with change in ownership, clearly has issues with its values in actually being anti racist. Myself being an indigenous and latine person, and my friend a Black woman do not feel comfortable and would advise other BIPOC to consider other stores before heading here.

Visiting Clary Sage Herbarium was such a pleasant experience! As soon as I walked in I was immediately asked if I wanted help finding anything. I wanted to see their sage and bowls. I was told about the differences in ingredients of each bundle, mini and large. Then of course I had to look at their jewelry! Lovely selection of everything! I will definitely be back! Thank you for being so welcoming!

I cannot say enough praise for this business. It has a special place in my heart as this shop was one of the very first places I visited in Portland (before I even lived here) I have seen it grow but not change a ton and I love that, It’s only gotten better! Every single person who has helped me out here are calm loving people who really have a passion for nature and it’s gifts. Ordering herbs online is the way to go especially if you know what you want already because you get 20% off which leaves some room for tips because they really do deserve it! Much love!

I found Clary Sage Herbarium online before arriving in Portland and it did not disappoint with its abundance of herbs to select from. I also enjoyed talking to the staff member who was a joy to talk to.

***EDITED/UPDATED REVIEW!*** Previously a 2-star review; SEE BELOW.
Updated review: I received an incredible email from the owner (or "steward") of this business in response to my review. They took full accountability for my concerns, asked questions and gave helpful insight on the issues and what they were doing about them. I was going back and forth between 4 and 5 stars for my update, but ultimately I'm less concerned about the issues that happen and MORE concerned about how it will be fixed/communicated/received/handled. As a business owner myself, I was blown away by the level of accountability, vulnerability and commitment they are demonstrating-- especially when they could have been salty with me for leaving a bad review! The level of thoughtfulness and care I experienced is relatively rare (unfortunately) out there in the world, but I was pleased to see it here. It sounds like some of my initial concerns are already taken care of and they're well on their way to tackling the rest. I also want to explicitly say that they did NOT ask me to update my review, I simply thought it seemed appropriate.
***ORIGINAL 2-STAR REVIEW BELOW***
Super disappointing. We've been ordering from Clary Sage for over a year. Over the course of that year, everything from this store has been extremely inconsistent. Quality, stock, price, measurements, customer service, etc. We would order an item--and then reorder a month later and get a very different version; lower quality, the "crumb" version of the herbs that had a lot less flavor, fragrance and effectiveness (but certainly the same price). There have been at least 2 times where we were given the incorrect amount (less than what we paid for). Several times of ordering something online just for it to be "out of stock" after paying for it all. The final straw, for me, was going online to place an order today just to find out that their pricing on most things (at least the 8 herbs I searched for) were at an alarmingly high price point. Most of them were at least 5X what they were just in my last order. Of course, I'm sure It's because of their supplier and what/where they get the herbs from, perhaps better quality and/or even more local(?). Although, it begs the question--what quality was I paying for before, then, when I was already paying a premium for their "great quality, organic, local herbs". I find it hard to believe that the shift in quality is SO great that it substantiates that large of an increase. If everything else was consistent (website matching stock, proper weight given, etc) I might consider it, but why would I when it's not consistent or enjoyable, especially when I can get other local, high quality, organic herbs for a fraction of what they're charging as of this post (Aug '24). Last thing I'll mention: I called to ask about stock on something about a week ago. The worker (manager? owner? not sure) asked for my phone number and email and said they would email me "that evening" with an update of when to expect the herb to be back in stock. Again, almost a week ago. I haven't heard from anyone. In theory, not a big deal, I can check the website...but why offer if they aren't going to do it? Another reason to add to the pile of decision makers to just go elsewhere.
