Spencer’s Place

Spencer's place is a coffee shop located in Surprise that employs individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities. They recently celebrated their 4th anniversary and opened a second location nearby as well.

The front doors were wide open on a beautiful Arizona spring day, and Racquel and Heidi greeted me with big, friendly smiles. I was eyeing the pastries on the counter when Racquel started talking to me about the pop tarts. I decided to have one, and she recommended I have her warm it up. It was like eating a warm peach cobbler... comfort food. Heidi walked me through different drinks and helped me decide on one of their specials this month. The sign board of specials changes theme with each month, and being that it was April, the theme was all blue drinks in honor of Autism Awareness month. I enjoyed my berry breeze botanical with lotus natural energy and added coconut milk. It was bright and refreshing...thank you Heidi.

As I was taking photos and video of the shop, Racquel continually smiled and waved. She came over to check on how I liked my order, and we got to chatting. She even walked me over to show me her portrait on the wall of staff caricature photos. Her energy was so positive and electric, and it really was much needed light in my day. The majority of the customers left with the baristas waving goodbye and saying their name. So the shop obviously has loyal customers. Raquel definitely made me feel special when I left as she remembered my name and gave me a big smile to go.

The restaurant is adorable! It's so friendly and inviting! You feel like your family as soon as you walk through the door!

The coffee is amazing! I enjoy a good coffee and this is hands down the best! They also have so many options for gluten and dairy free individuals!

Oh, and their pastries! Delicious! They'll even heat it up for you! Gluten free, dairy free, nut free - no problem, they got you covered!

I will 100% be back any time I'm on that side of town!
